Rhythmic Gymnastics: Feelings

VLADA IREESHA

Rhythmic Gymnastics is a very emotive sport: isnt’t it? Gymnasts are rivals but they are also best friends. We all even can see the good relationship between coaches and their gymnast. Natural development through games and sport gives a deep feeling of accomplishment. Emotion is a central feature of Rhythmic Gymnastics. Gymnasts, as well as supporters, could experience many emotions, such as joy, sadness, anger, fear, anxiety, shame or guilt, and pride. Most emotion theorists argue that emotions have the power to motivate and regulate cognitions and behaviors in sport.

Happiness  and  joy  are  associated  with  the  attainment  of  important  goals  and the  demonstration  of  competence, such as winning medals.  When they are happy, gymnasts are more likely to smile and embrace significant others (for example, their team partner). Although they could be rivals, Margarita Mamun and Yana Kudryavtseva were really close to each other during Olympic Games.  Loss is more likely to lead to sadness,  with  tell-tale  facial  expressions,  occasional crying,  initial  behavioral  isolation,  and  the  urge to  seek  comfort  from  others. Aliya Garayeva from Azerbaijan cried after qualifying 4th at Olympic Games All Around Final.

Fear is triggered by  the  appraisal  of  impending  danger  related  to physical or psychological harm. Ekaterina Halkina confirmed some weeks ago that she suffered from anxiety. The fear emotion  can  activate  fear-related  memories  and learned behaviors, thus increasing the strength of the fear response.

Olympic Champion in 2016, Margarita Mamun starred the documentary by Marta Prus Over the Limit, “an intimate portrait of the world’s most outstanding rhythmic gymnast Margarita Mamun who needs to overcome mental fragility to take part in the Olympic Games.” This riveting documentary reaveals a behind-the-scenes drama about the intensive physical and mental labor put into a sport which thrieves on its beautiful aesthetics.

Gesture in rhythmic gymnastics is deliberate, elaborate, adjusted and designed for a spectacular effect. Its purpose is to make the gymnast’s performance bright and rich. Every gesture has the exact meaning, conveys emotions, feelings and mood, helps to design the whole message of the composition. Many gymnasts open up their emotions on their routines.

Even a professional rhythmic gymnast sometimes can’t calm her nerves at the right moment, relax and ease unnecessary tension. In such situation there’s a risk of “psychological breakdown”.

Many other gymnasts suffered from eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Russian rhythmic gymnastics star, Aleksandra Soldatova revealed a few weeks ago she was suffering from an eating disorder: bulimia. Just a few days before she talked to Tass Press Agency, Russian yellow press confirmed that Aleksandra tried to commit suicide and she was admited into a psychiatric ward at a hospital in Moscow. Spanish promising star, Olatz Rodríguez (17 years old) confirmed in her own Instagram site that she is suffering (and still recovering) from anorexia.

For the first time in history, a part of “October Palace” has being evacuated which concerns Deriugina School of Gymnastics in Kiev. The rest of “October Palace” is not closing down but it is in the same critical condition. Deriugina School requests to save the whole building. As a result of this situation, the gymnasts who were training at this Sports Hall are not allowed to train inside.

The October Palace is officially known as the International Center of Culture and Arts”. This building was almost destroyed after Second World War, but was renovated between 1952 and 1959. During Euromaidan protest in 2014, the October Palace became occupied by protesters.

A part of this building is also the main training centre for the Deriugins School, the most important Rhythmic Gymnatics training center in Ukraine. After 2014 protest in Kiev, the gymnasts needed to leave this sports hall and moved to “Atlet” training center. A part of Deriugina School suffered a robbery.

“This building is not only a school of gymnastics, it is a legendary place for gymnasts in Ukraine, were World, European and Olympic medallist used to train. For us, it is like our second home” – said Olympian Anna Rizatdinova.

Deriugina School became a legend in Rhythmic Gymnastics history. It is (and it actually was) a second home, life and training center for thousand of gymnasts for 50 years. Last week, Albina Deriugina (founder of the school) claimed to Ukrainian Government not to close her school. Since 1992, this school runs the biggest international competition in Ukraine “Deriugina Cup”. European, World and Olympic medallist trained at this center.

At first of June of 2020, the Ukrainian authorities closed the access to October Palace for Deriugina School. You can support them under the hashtag #savederiuginaschool , a legendary Sports Hall in Rhythmic Gymnastics.

The beggining of my career at Deriugina School in Kiev was really hard, but the whole team is indeed really friendly. My coaches always understand my situation and support me

Her favorite competition is Deriugina Cup Grand Prix, which usually takes part in spring. These year, Deriugina Cup was cancelled because of the COVID-19 health emergency. But Vlada’s goal is definitly to become an Olympian.

“I dream to reach Olympic Games. This idea motivates me to train every single day.”

Vlada is in National Team since 2017, where she placed 8th in all around junior groups competition at European Championships in Budapest. Just a year later, in 2018, Vlada made her debut as a senior individual gymnast, placing 4th in all-around competition. Grand Prix Thiais (France)- Cancelled- Official Press Communication by Organizers:

Dear friends,

The situation of the Coronavirus virus – COVID 19 in France leads the Organizing Committee to cancel the 34th edition of the Internationaux de Thiais scheduled for next March 28 and 29, in view of the risks that this could cause the foreign delegations taking part and the public many who attend the event.

DINA AVERINA 3

Dina Averina (RUS) at Grand Prix Thiais 2019

Several delegations have already canceled their participation in the Brno Grand Prix scheduled for this weekend as well as in the Marbella Grand Prix scheduled for next week. They will do the same for the Grand Prix de Thiais.

Our disappointment is great and that of the gymnasts and their staff and the public will be even greater as we can imagine.

However, we cannot – in the absence of certainty as to the continuation in stage 2 of the epidemic by March 28 – to maintain the competition.

EKATERINA SELEZNEVA4

Ekaterina Selezneva (RUS) at Grand Prix Thiais 2019

Stage 3 during which the virus circulates and is transmissible on the whole territory, could be set up in the short term and thus oblige us to cancel the competition a few days before and thus penalize both the delegations and the public who would have bought their tickets.

Beyond the city of Thiais alone, spectators today come from all over the metropolis and even from abroad.

For spectators who have already bought their place, a reimbursement procedure will be put in place by the organizing committee. All information will be present on the site http://www.grandprixthiais.fr and on social networks as soon as possible.

The Organizing Committee deeply regrets this case of force majeure and renounces only forced and forced. He hopes that everyone will understand the position taken and see you all in March 2021

With our best regards.
